The African penguin population is decreasing. Due to the historical exploitation of African penguin eggs and guano and ongoing oil pollution, only 10% of the original penguin population remains. There are only 50 000 breeding pairs of African Penguins remaining world-wide and they are considered vulnerable to extinction. 
It's that time of year again when we are urged to haul out spades, dig holes and plant trees. Or at least we should be so urged. Heck with climate change we need to be doing all the planting of trees we can possibly muster.
